I first dealt with Steve when he worked for one of the big four banks, this was in July 2008 i.e. over 9 years ago. His advice was to shift my share portfolio – already held at this bank – into a superannuation account. Obviously, this was for tax reasons. Apart from the original share portfolio an additional AUD 150,000 was added to the portfolio at this time. The original share portfolio was also restructured to some extent.

As noted above, this was in July 2008 i.e. 2 months before the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the timing was shall we say less than optimal. Steve had the good judgement to place AUD 75,000 of these additional funds initially into a term deposit. The value of the superannuation portfolio did of course drop in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis however by nowhere as much as the share market on average. It recovered the lost ground quickly and since then it has performed well.

I can therefore recommend the financial advice of Steve in both good markets and in bad. In good markets it should be easy to increase the value of a share portfolio (although some cannot manage it) – a rising tide lifts all boats. My superannuation account was set up 2 months before the biggest stock market crash in 80 years. In the subsequent 9 years it has since out-performed the market and grown strongly. The performance of Steve needs to be seen in this context.

I therefore did not hesitate to follow Steve when he left the Bank and set up on his own.
